mac os x 10.3.9 installing problem!!!!!

hi, i just bought a new 5g ipod and to buy videos for the ipod, you have to have 10.3.9 or higher. well i tried to install it but it only got to the part where it couldnt install the software in the destination that i selected. but i cant change the destination. how do i do this? it says that this volume does not meet the requirements that it takes to update the program. please help. thanks for your help.

-How much free space have you got on the destination disk?
-Are you using the combo updater?
-Are you trying to install 10.3.9 on an external disk? If so, is it connected to your computer with a USB ar FireWire cable?

What system is currently running on your machine? Do you have a version of 10.3?
