Mac OS X 10.4.11 won't play movies anymore...

Hi All,
My DVD drive has been broken for sometime so I can only watch movies that i've collected on my pen drive. The AVIs I have won't play with the version of quicktime or realplayer that I have, I downloaded VLC, but it closes the minute i try to open it. I'd greatly appreciate any advice on free software that i could download to watch different formats of movies.

Don't know what you're each running for Macs as it does make a difference! But I'll try to point you in the right direction Look for older copies of these two apps, "Flip4mac and"Perian". The first will handle your wmv. files and the second most everything else. You will need to install the latest version of Quicktake for 10.4.11 for them to work properly. You might find them here, http://www.pure-mac.com/. If I knew what your configurations were it would be a great help !
