i just got an old imac g3 with a 6GB hard drive and i was planning to put the jaguar or panther osx operating system on my old g3 i have ways of getting it form one computer to the mac but it has the original operating system on it witch is v8.5.1 what would i have i have to do to upgrade to jaguar or panther?

You would need to find the installer for Jaguar or Panther.
Neither of those would have a lot of room on a 6GB hard drive.
The problem with upgrading to a larger hard drive, is that OS X has to be installed on a partition that is smaller than 8GB on your old iMac.
You would also want to upgrade the old operating system to OS 9, for better use with OS X. If you want to dump the old OS 8 or 9, then you can also erase the hard drive, and install the OS X system to a clean hard drive.
How much RAM memory is installed? An original system, may also have the original memory, which could be as little as 32MB. Either Jaguar or Panther would need at least 128 MB, but you would want to upgrade to as much as you can. Most of the original iMacs can be upgraded to as much as 512MB, if you can find compatible memory sticks
