MAC OSX compatibility & RAM requirements question for CS3

Guys,

I recently bought a second hand G4 iBook so that I could work at home on projects I have to do for my Graphic Design night course.

I got a copy of CS3 (the same one we use at college) from a mate of mine but could not install it as I have Mac OSX 10.0.9, I was going to buy a more recent version of Mac OSX that is compatiable but am wondering if my machine will be able to handle it anyway. Rather stupidly I didn't check the requirments too closely and assumed I would be able to run it without issue.

My iBook is maxed out with RAM of 1.25 gig, will I be able to run CS3 on this amount?

What version of Mac OSX should I buy, ideally I'd like the one that will represent best value for money while allowing me to use CS3?

Any help or information greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Amp

I recommend Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4).

You will know whether or not you can run Adobe CS3 on that machine with that version of the operating system by simply checking the "System Requirements" for Adobe CS3, which should be printed on the side of the Adobe CS3 software box you got from your friend.

Oops, I meant to say that im using MACOSX 10.3.9

I heard alright that I will need from 10.4 onwards so thank you for that. if someone could advise the cheapest version of MACOSX from 10.4 onwards that would be really cool :)

Can anyone advise regard the RAM requirments? Would I get away with using 1.25 gig of it?

It depends on what you'd consider "adequate". On a G4 iBook with 1.25 GB RAM, it'll be dog-slow for me. It all depends on the size of the files you want to work with. Certainly you can create a rectangle in Illustrator and work on a 640*480 px photo in Photoshop well with that setup, the problem arises once you're trying to work on more heavy-duty files. Of course the 1024*768 px display of the iBook isn't really made for working on large graphics files either.

You can make it work. The question remains whether the result will meet your needs.
