I'm thinking about going mac refurb - is it worth it? i'm sorta scared putting my hard-loaned cash into dodgy kit. obviously apple won't tell the bad stories, but at the same time, how cheap is it? on, say 12" ibook/pbook am i saving £25 or £250?

Cheers zammy!

one thing it doesn't say though is how often it does actually get up to 45% discount. i mean "up-to" 45% discount is very looses marketing wording :P

I and a guy at work, bought an iMac G5 Refrub from the Apple store. Mine came and all has been fine, just like a new system. The guy I work with, he bought a refurb extreme card in addition to a refurb iMac G5. When he got both of them in, he noticed the extreme card had a weird dent in it. Thinking it was just refurbed and not a big deal, he installed it. When he installed it, he noticed the power supply wasn't secure in all the way. So, he put it all back together and had issues with his wireless networking. Then, his computer started randomly shutting down and pretty soon it wouldn't stay on for more than 10 minutes.

Apple gladly replaced the card and the power supply and all is good now. But, this guy was a switcher, so it wasn't the best experience for him, but he is happy with the results.

I can't afford to always buy something NEW so getting a refurb is the best I can get and still save some $$$.

i've bought 2 refurb products from apple. the first was a G3 Yosemite. The motherboard had to be replaced and cost about half of what we paid for the com it self. The second thing i gor refurb from apple was an iBook G3. about 3 months after the warranty went out, the hard drive failed.

so i am not planning to buy refurb again.

the first computer i ever bought was a refurb and it ran flawlessly for about 9 1/2 years of being on and running, until about 6 months ago when my brother finally retired it for good. it was a performa 630 (33mhz).

my dual G4/867 was a refurb and it has been on and running since day one with zero downtime or troubles.

sidenote: because i remotely admin my computers alot and appleshare heavily between them i have none of them set to go to sleep either.

edit: fixed typo
