.mac spam problem?

I'm curious if anyone else is noticing a major increase in the amount of spam in their .mac e-mail account. I'm getting close to 8 new spam messages a day now all sent to an address similar, but not identical to my .mac address.

Most of it is really nasty spam too. I'm talking pictures that could get a guy that works in a family workplace fired. While the spam filter in Mail will catch some of it, it can't get it all. Plus, if I chek it through WebMail, there are no filters.

Is anyone else having this problem? Is there anyway to report these spammers to Apple?

I have been very exclusive about who I give my mac email to and for what I use it for. So, I don't receive any spam on mine at all. Whereas my comcast email, which i distribute quite freely gets spam daily.

I have both Comcast and .mac.com and get very little spam, none at all from .mac.com.

I can count the number of people who have my .mac mail address on one hand. The fact is that the spam is being sent to a given range of .mac addresses similar to mine. This isn't a matter of me giving my address out. It's a matter of a spam program "guessing" my address using an address generator.

I am VERY careful about who I give my .Mac address to. Most people/companies get my Yahoo one. That one is FLOODED with spam. (easily 100+ a day)

In my 2 years or so with .Mac I've gotten exactly 2 pieces of spam from Jack Daniels (which I tracked to a site I mistakenly DID give my Mac email address to and unsubscribed) and 3 emails from those crazy African nations wanting me to launder their money. I believe those are random guesses. 3 in 2 years. Not bad. I just wish Mac's spam filters would delete it since the content is 99% the same from something I already told it was spam.

And it's not like I don't give my account out...I sign up for newsletters from trusted companies, use it for forums (but don't publically display it), give it to friends/coworkers/family.

I ordered recently from LTD Commodities from an email account that I only use for business and never have received spam on it. Since ordering from LTD I'm getting flooded with emails for Viagra, penis enlargements, prescriptions, gas mileage, etc. 31 today so far.

I have about 6 different e-mail addresses. My university account gets hammered with spam. Spam on it gets sent to every username from a to z @okstate.edu. My address just happens to be in the middle of that. I presume this is done by an address generator.

Using my Web hosting plan I've set-up accounts specifically for lists and varying accounts so that I never have to tell them my .mac account, which I consider my main, most-used account. As said before, the same thing seems to be happening with my .mac account as my university account. Given these specific steps I've taken, it irritates me even more that I'm still getting spammed.

It might not be such a big deal if it weren't for the type of spam it is. I mean who wants to see the before and after pictures in a viagra knock-off message while your having your morning coffee? Yikes. Can't delete that fast enough.

I think once your address is are out there on the spam lists it is very difficult to end it. I do a lot of online shopping (Hey, just doing my part to stimulate the economy - and no, no porn or other spammy type stuff!) and despite using the junk mail filters my .mac account became over run, but I don't really think it was any fault of Apple. I finally just couldn't take it and quit my .mac account and now use my comcast account. So far Comcast is free and clear, but I am terrified of entering my email address on any new site. It is just awful.

Somewhat related, but is there any way cookies can transfer your default IE email address to a site? I always wondered about this because it seemed I was getting spam related to sites I visited (again, no porn...).

I use my Comcast account as my main account, ordering on the web, etc, and get almost no spam on that account.

i think it's possible, karavite.

i recently made an autoresponse to an old email account of mine. something like "Sorry, this email is for spam only. If you want to email me, please use my other email address". Without telling which address it is. It is horrible when your email address is short and guessable - that one definitely is .. 4 letters @iol.it. It's been put to all those spam address cds, so i get about every possible spam, and i never bother to read that mail because of it. Aw. :(

That's good news! I wonder what they are doing? Well, it is good news for anything but my wallet!!! I have a hard time in this web enabled world of instant gratification! :)
