I use my Macbook Pro with several displays: a 24" Dell at work, a 30" Apple at home, and sometimes others. I am using Tiger (10.4.11). I use it closed, with the external display being the only display.
When I connect my Macbook to a display, I typically first connect DVI, ethernet, and USB (for keyboard/mouse), last the power.
The problem I have is that when I then touch some key to wake up the Macbook, it often fails to respond. Sometimes it locks up so badly that the only way I can get out is to press on the power button for 4 secs, until the power goes out, and then do a hard reboot. As I switch external monitor more than once a day, I am now doing a hard reboot every day or two!!
Am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to recite some special magic words when connecting the laptop to the external display and waking it up?
I have lots of software installed, but the two things that come to mind are X (from the official apple distribution), and FanControl, to avoid burning my legs.
Any help? I apologize if this is a standard question, a quick search did not get me anywhere.
