Macbook Pro doesn't detect jump drive

Hi, I have a Macbook pro (OSX 10.4.11) and all of a sudden it stopped detecting a fairly new Jump/Flash drive that up until now worked fine. The icon doesn't show up on the desktop or in the Macintosh HD window.

The flash drive has "Dane-Elec" printed on it and is 4GB. I've tried it a number of times and nothing. The drive does still work on other computers, and my usb port is working properly with other devices. Any ideas?

Well first off I have tried opening Disk Utility and it has been "gathering information" for about 10 minutes now.

Regarding what type of jump drive it is, unfortunately I don't know. I'm not familiar with the difference between FAT32 and HFS+ and I'm guessing there's no way to tell as long as it doesn't show up on my computer.
 
ok, so I was able to erase the disk using Disk Utility (wouldn't let me repair or anything else), but now when I put it in a message pops up saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." What's up with that?
 
Give me a few minutes--need to boot up on my disk to recall the sequence! :) I think there may be an easier way, but let me see. . . .

I have an external hard drive, so you can probably just do this with your Disk Utility located in your Utilities folder in Applications:

Just as you did to erase the disk with DU, format it to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)--you will want it "Journaled" or you may have problems. I do not know what "Case Sensitive" means--never used it. Perhaps a Guru can explain, but I have not had a problem.

Case sensitive allows files of the same name but some difference in letter case to be in the same directory ("folder"). The standard format from Apple is not case sensitive.

For example, in the standard format, "Mac OS Extended (journaled)", a file named "filename.txt" would be identified exactly the same as "fileName.txt" so the two must be in different directories. With the "case sensitive" format, they are seen as different files. Some third-party applications are not designed for the case sensitive format so they may not always perform correctly. Unless you have a pressing need to save or locate files based on letter case, stick with the non-case sensitive option.

Wow, well it actually was already set to Journaled so I changed it to just Macintosh OS Extended and erased it again and now it works!!! Thank you SOOO much for your help!
