Well this has been an issue for the past two months or so and i have tried numerous different ways to fix it and now i figured i should seek some help. I have been refurbishing this macbook pro for about four months and as of two months ago i began experiencing random shutdowns. I know this is common on mbp's but i'm trying to get to the bottom of the problem so i know if its the logic board or if there is another thing contributing (software, harddrive, heat issue).
When the computer boots up everything runs perfectly, no weird sounds or bad performance, its perfect, but after a period of time (sometimes fifteen minutes sometimes 12 hours) it will just shut off. No shutdown procedure, no anything just be off, like there's no power. I thought it was the battery at first even though it is always connected to the power adapter so i took the battery out and started it up again and after a few hours it did it again so i knew it wasn't specifically the battery. I looked into the console and saw that when i booted the system up again it said"
"Nov 5 18:02:18 localhost kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -82
Nov 5 18:02:20 localhost DirectoryService[31]: Improper shutdown detected"
After looking up that error code i found out that stands for a "fmt1err" or "can't find sector 0 after track format". This was little help as i have no idea what piece of hardware this error pertains to since there is virtually no documentation on advanced mac repair. I went with the only lead and hoped that it was the harddrive going bad, so i made a backup of my system and booted off the backup so i could run diagnostics. I ran techtool pro 4.1 and rebuilt the file system, defragmented the hard drive, did a surface scan, everything i could. The surface scan showed two bad sectors and as a long stretch i booted from my leopard disc and ran the disc utility on a single pass erase while writing all 0's onto each bit. Then copied everything back over and booted into my system.
It was working just fine but after a while it shut down again so i knew it wasn't the bad sectors but i hadn't ruled out the hardware issue for the drive (it is a seagate). I tried resetting the PMU, the Nvram, it still will have random shutdowns. Sometimes when it shuts down it will not boot until the second or third time when i hit the power button (the light will come on and i might hear the hardware passed sound and then the light will turn back off again and i have to try it again to get it to boot, and oddly enough i don't hear the harddrive spinning up when that occurs) most of the time though it will boot perfectly the first time after it shuts down. I have not tried swapping the memory i will try that after i submit my ticket.
Other than that i don't know what else to do. Unfortunately i don't have a hardware test disc for this system since i got it from a person that didn't keep any of the original stuff and of course i don't have apple care for this one. The only other thing to say is i do have a number of applications that run constantly so i haven't tried a fresh install to see if it does it in a clean environment. I will give some console code as well maybe it will help. This is the startup sequence the system reports.
