Macbook pro, strange effect on headphone

Hello

My macbook pro headphone output is ALTERING the output sound. The USB next to it is also not working ever since I plugged an external hard drive with what must have been a dodgy power supply. (!!!!!)

It's a very strange effect on the headphones but when I listen to movies the ambient, atmosphere sounds are very loud and the dialogue is very quiet almost missing.

Similarly when I listen to songs (and I do a lot of music mixing on my computer) the vocals are very quiet and other elements are very loud.

When playing audio through my MOTU audio interface or export to CD/memory stick and play on another system there is no problem.

It's like some strange phasing/cancellation issue. I cannot think of any software I have installed that would affect it, though I wonder if there is a possibility it is a software issue. Does anyone know of a way of resetting the audio software? (or something!?!?!!?)

I'm assuming it's probably a hardware issue but thought I'd post this to see if anyone has heard of this before.

Many Thanks!!!!!!

If its one of the pre unibody Macbook Pros, its most likely the the left i/o board which serves as the sound board, magsafe charging board, and left usb port. Not a horribly expensive part (especially compared to a logic board) and relatively easy for an experienced Apple laptop technician to replace.
