Macbook Pro Wont Shut Down After Sleep

I have a Macbook Pro with the latest software updates. I also have a verizon v640 express card used to connect to the internet. I have read similar issues but I have yet to find a solution. Once the macbook pro is put to sleep, not only am I unable to connect to the internet as others have stated, but I am unable to shut down without forcing it to do so by holding down the power button. When trying to shut down, the final "blue" screen appears but the spinning ball just keeps on spinnin'. Has there been any solutions to this problem? If so, I would really appreciate some suggestions. Thanks in advance for all your time and effort.

What if you eject the card before sleep?

Well, I tried both methods of shutting down; 1, connecting to the internet, put the computer to sleep, wake up, try shutting down, and 2, connecting to the internet, disconnecting from the internet, put the computer to sleep, try shutting down.

The first method does not allow me to shut down properly.

The second method works fine.

I suppose the second method is an option when at home or while actively using the computer for a set period of time before manually shutting down. However, at work, I leave the computer running, often while having to leave for an unknown period of time. I suppose I can change the sleep timer, but I power off of the battery where I work and would like to conserve the battery with sleep mode.

One thing I noticed is that the menu states "disconnecting" while putting the computer to sleep and seems to never fully disconnect. I think a possible solution would be to have the computer fully disconnect from the net before sleeping or to not disconnect at all. Is there any way to force either of these ideas into effect?
