Macbook running slowly

I've had my macbook since april and all of a sudden its slowing down. Not sure if I have a virus or what, and how to find that out? This is my first mac.

I only have Stickies as a login item... RAM is memory right? I have 1GB.

I don't have very many programs-

the sims 2, aim, adobe photosohop, microsoft word, firefox, and limewire are the only programs I have other then the typical macbook programs (safari, imovie, iphoto, etc)

You'll notice a big slowdown in Photoshop, Word, and possibly the Sims because they have to run under Rosetta. You shouldn't notice a slowdown running universal apps, such as Safari.

1 GB of RAM should be sufficient for most things.

I installed the sims the first week I had my computer, and it stayed fast. I only got word and photoshop in the last week... but even when i'm not using them things go slowly.

Because Rosetta has to translate the PowerPC-based OS X applications like the Sims, Office, and Photoshop to something the Intel processor can understand, performance takes a hit. Applications that are Intel native or applications that are Universal Binaries (which are native to both PowerPC and Intel Macs) will run much quicker on the Intel Macs than older PowerPC-based OS X apps running under Rosetta.

If you check the sites for the Sims application, they might have a Universal Binary that you can download so you can run the game natively on your MacBook.

Also, running maintenance apps like Onyx and others that were mentioned help keep the system lean and mean.

I suggest checking Activity Monitor (found in Application -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor) and check the CPU usage. There could be some application that is taking loads of CPU power.

:-D Just got a universal binary for the sims 2,

i'll see if it helps... but can i do something like that for word and photoshop? also, what on earth is Onyx?

Viro- My CPU is flashing around between 3 and 8... but I don't have anything open other than firefox. I opened up Word and it shot up to 30...but went right back down.

Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't have Universal Binaries for Office, at least not until the next release of Office for the Mac (if there ever will be one). As for Photoshop, once Adobe releases Photoshop CS3 it will be Universal. But they won't be doing it for CS2 or earlier.
