Macbook with 10.5.8 curser freezes usually after sleep

I have searched these threads and googled to death, with others problems not quite matching.

The System:

- Macbook (Serial # 4H6262ZWVMN)
- 10.5.8 (all software updates), loaded via upgrade CD from 10.4
- Kernal: Darwin 9.80
- 2GHz Intel
- 1GB SDRAM (Apple Installed)
- no peripherals plugged in.

The Problem:

The computer freezes. More exactly, it sometimes "soft-freezes" (i.e., the curser goes to essentially still, sometimes/randomly taking minor moves from trackpad input, sometimes typing slowing/stopping then "catching-up" after long pauses -- like an extreme version of RAM slow-downs), and other times the computer freezes entirely (curser instantly freezes, sometimes after disappearing for some short amount of time). The full freezes occur almost always after sleep, and more rarely during use. These problems occur without relation to being plugged in, or, really, any other action, or software use, and without relation to how long it has been running (sometimes immediately after start up, sometimes after an hour of use).

Force restart almost always solves the problem temporarily. Rarely it restarts straight into being frozen.

Have also had one couple quirky issue: a few times now it's kicked-back my wifi login for not being the correct password, when this is the same password stored in my keychain for the last 8 months.

Attempted Solutions:

- Full 7x erase and reinstall of 0S 10.5 (via 10.4 and 10.5 update CD, and all software/firmware updates). Computer is completely clean of all additional software. 12GB of 92 used after fresh install.
- Reset PRAM multiple times.
- Reset SMC
- Reseated RAM
- Verify/repair disk permissions x3-4 (finding some problems* but essentially checking out)
- Hardware Text x2 (from 10.4 disc, since 10.5 update disk doesn't have HT)

And:

Before this problem began, it had been running essentially unaltered (hardware/software/peripherals) for about a year with no previous problems (well, problems like this one, anyway). I'm not running any programs that aren't in the OS disc (have done a full reinstall, afterall).

Suggestions are greatly appreciated. At this point I'm just glad I've managed to type all of this without "the freeze." Let's see if I can make it to submission before all hell breaks ...

* numerous "ACL found but not expected on . . ." as well as numerous "Permissions differ on . . .", but with repairs returning "complete."

1GB of RAM is not alot to work with running 10.5.8. You should keep an eye on activity monitor to watch what process is doing what when the freeze occurs. I'd be interested in what Activity Monitor is showing with RAM. How are the page outs and page ins?

As it's a MacBook, part of the RAM will perform for graphics. That will leave you about 950 MB of the RAM as RAM use - 64 MB will perform for graphics.
That just isn't much - 2 GB (max for yours) would be much better.

How did you run the hardware test? When running it for freezes it should run in extended mode, looped (ctrl+L to get to loop, and same to quit loop) at least for a few hours. Especially minor problems with RAM may take a while to get detected.

Another thing that would be good to check is the Console application (/Applications/Utilities).
When you see the beachball and freeze, and get back to the system afterwards, open Console and get the lines of what happened before this freeze.
You can also look for a line with word shutdown in it.

You can copy and paste the lines from when and before the freezes happen/ed here.
If in doubt, include a few minutes before the freeze as well.

djackmac: Running only safari at the moment (aside from the other random processes going), and there is approx 482 MB used, 531 Free, VM at 27 GB, and page ins at 92 with Page outs at zero.

What exactly should I look for on Activity Monitor when the freeze occurs? Also, see below for response RE amount of RAM installed.

Giaguara: I am out of town at the moment, but will run Hardware Test as suggested just as soon as I get back to my disks. Also, I'll watch console and try to post lines sooner than that.

However, I should note three things additionally:

First, when it freezes there is not a beachball -- the curser simply freezes in place, or disappears altogether.

Second, I should also note that other things other than the curser appear to continue working -- for example, a web page may keep loading.

Third, as for the idea that the problem is related to insufficient memory, as I mentioned before I've been running the same for over a year with no similar problems; it just started suddenly, one day a few weeks ago. I get, though, that perhaps the last OS update requires a tic more memory than the previous update. Still, the problem seems an odd one to simply be insufficient memory, and the symptoms don't seem to support that solution, as there is no beachball and at least some processes appear to keep functioning in the background.

Thanks to you both! Console and Activity Monitor info to follow I hope.

Well, "the freeze" was immediately helpful: I couldn't see the activity monitor, but the console information, cut roughly, is pasted below.

But first, another clue -- this time, when the curser froze, the screen was dimmed on its way toward sleep. While the curser was frozen and the screen dimmed, i tapped the space bar and it un-dimmed the screen as normal.

Here's the 'all messages' console information from before the freeze (which was at just about 9:54 p.m., and before force restart):

Hardware is not responding, and it's later marked offline.

The line "16AtherosInterface is not compatible with its superclass, 16IO80211Interface superclass changed" I've seen much earlier - around 10.5.2 updates, and that those errors were generally fixed with a driver update of 10.5.3.

As it was working fine before going to 10.5, it is more likely a driver or kext thing than a physical thing with the airport.

So what we could try would be e.g.
- install Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Intel update on it, even if it shows that it's already in 10.5.8. The update may be able to fix the hiccups with Yukon and Atheros above
- Bluetooth wouldn't usually interfere with airport, but just in case, it wouldn't hurt to try with bluetooth off when it's not in use. For some reason your bluetooth complains about going to legacy mode
- I'd be also curious to see if there is any difference in this airport freeze if you manually turn off airport before putting the Mac to sleep. After waking it up, just turn the airport on. Trying this a few times (like five or ten or so) would at least show if it happens this way or not. If it doesn't, then something in the AP driver or kexts is not liking to be waken up
- I guess you don't have Boot Camp? If you do, can you connect from there, and is this ever happening when you use the Windows partition? And would the BC drivers be up to date? Or Fusion or Parallels... if you have those installed and are using a virtual machine, would the issue happen with it too? (If you have neither boot camp nor those software, ignore)

The machine has now taken to freezing almost immediately after startup -- im lucky to get a few minutes. Sometimes it frees up for a few minutes again, then back to freeze.

That said, what's the best way to install the update package aside from the freeze? And where are those packages found piecemeal?

As for bluetooth -- why would it be on, active at all? Is it on by default? I don't use it.

Also, having airport on or off doesn't seem to avoid the freeze -- afterall, even in safe mode it freezes after sleep.

Either way, all the sudden the freeze has now gotten angry often.

For bluetooth, default is on. Switch it on from system preferences. Better off when not in use (also for privacy).

If you can boot in safe boot (hold down shift from startup until you see the words safe boot - will take longer than normal boot). You'll need a wired connection to the net to download the update, or bring the update separately e.g. via a USB stick to the Mac. If it's software related, we should have much less changes of seeing crashes in safe boot. You can find the updates in Apple's site, so downloading them using another computer and installing those combo packages that way is an option. (with USB stick you don't even need the wired internet).
Even if it seems to freeze in safe boot, let's give that a try.

By the way the newer Macs have the hardware test built-in to them. Hold down "d" letter at boot (if I remember correct), and you should have all the test options (except for turning on or off loop it's always the manual ctrl-L).
It would be odd if it is hardware as it didn't happen in earlier OS, and it has all those atheros references, but I guess 10.5 and 10.6 can use the drivers differently too.
