machine keeps hanging up

my machine at work is constantly hanging up when I try to use (or 'awake' it) from the screen saver mode. Also, when I try simple tasks like quitting apps., shutting down, restarting, etc. it tells me that 'the application wasn't able to shut down properly' and that 'shut down has timed out'. Often when I just move from finder to mail or something like that I get beach balled for 30+ seconds.
My mailbox is not full, and I have 120GB of space with only 21GB accounted for. I'm running 10.4.7 and I am having to force quit and zap the PRAM at least twice a day, and I fear this is a preamble to something worse.
Any suggestions? thanks.

There is lots... but first, is this a new install of 10.4.7? or upgrade? What kind of machine? G4/G5 Laptop? VW?

Any system mods? WindowShadeX is a good to muck stuff up with 10.4.7. (For me anyway)

How much RAM? Did you check permissions? Run FSCK -fy under single user?
Verify your disk?

Constantly crashing will corrupt your HD content, though.

It's a quiksliver G4, 120GB of RAM WITH 99GB available. It's an upgrade to 10.4.7. No system mods that I can think of, and I'm the only one on this machine.
What is FSCK -fy? Also, a little unclear what you were saying about WindowShadeX.
I have verified the disk and repaired all permissions multiple times.
