I copy and paste mail messages from my IMAP account into a new
subfolder (called Copy) in the "On My Mac" section of Mac Mail in
order to archive them before deletion from the University's server.
The mail messages (w/attachments) in this Copy are obviously cached (the size of the folder is 2.2 GB by now). But I can't read these messages in Mac Mail. The body shows up with... "The message from ... concerning "..." has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.

Is there any way to force Mac Mail to read the cached version? I get the same experience whether I'm online or not, or whether I use the same Mail Library in Tiger on another CPU.

I can move that Copy file into MS Entourage to access the archived mail, but doing so is a hassle.

I continue to use Panther on my favorite Powerbook because I have a severe aversion to Spotlight for finding anything, so please don't suggest upgrading to Leopard.
