MacOS X is showing corrupt iTunes titles

Recenty I converted from MacOS 9 to X as a permanent move.
I have been running a dual boot system mainly under 9 with my mp3 files shared between X and 9. Most if not all were ripped under 9 and this behaviour has not been seen in 9. The disk is not corrupt.

Today having made the leap of faith I find that 50/1000 mp3 files are showing junk tag data in iTunes. However the files are playable and exist on disk.

What gives?

iTunes 2.04 on TiBook on 10.1.3 with 512mb/40gb.
