MacOS X won't switch off iMac Monitor

In the preferences "energy saver" panel I have set my built-in iMac monitor to switch off after 20 minutes. Unfortunately, OS X won't really shut down the monitor after the set time. Although the screen will get black, the monitor will b still switched on, as I can see when its dark in my room (its kinda "dark glowin'"). Under OS 9, there wuz no glowing, so I guess its a OS X related problem... has anybody a glue how to get the screen to completely switch off and not only to get black?

my imacs power light is green :) its always green, except when i turn off the imac or when i put it to sleep. then the light will turn red.

which model iMac do you have? does the power light pulse?

what are your energy saver settings for hard disk and system sleep?

when its monitor is dark but its not asleep... does the monitor still give off heat throught the vents? or is your mac as cool as when it is asleep?

just trying to narrow things down a bit.

Delete this file in the Library/Preferences folder of your hard drive.

com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
Deleting it solved a problem I had with X and dimming my monitor and with spinning down the hard drive.
