MacOSX10.2.8 doesn't close down cleanly

Since installing the most recent security update, I find that my system is a bit less stable. I've been having application failures that are imune to forced quit. In addition, the system will now not do a proper soft shut down; if I want to shut down my only real option is to hold the front panel button on my processor (733MHz G4). Finally, there is something distinctly different about the way the system responds to USB activity. For example, it frequently doesn't see a newly plugged in flash disc. But sometimes it does. I have an attention button on my CanoScan (USB) scanner which used to start up the CanoScan toolbox; now it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't.
Any advice appreciated.

Yep, it can be as simple as that -- and one other note, you should never turn off your computer with the front button unless all else fails. There are system procedures that run and make sure the system is ready to be turned off when you select "Shut down" from the menu, and if you simply cut the power to the system to turn it off, those procedures won't run and could cause system corruption on down the line. Sometimes all it takes it one time and the system is hosed.

Also, are you using a USB hub? Try removing any and all USB devices (except the keyboard and mouse) and see if the system behaves better.
