MacStumbler or iStumbler?

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
I'm looking for a program that will detect wireless networks in my area while I'm offline. Do both the aforementioned applications do this? Which one is better?

Thanks for your input, gang.

They both do the same thing, i use MacStumbler to dected any wi-fi networks around.
Thanks for your reply. I'm going with MacStumbler too. I was checking out the screen shots and reviews for both--and both got four and a half out of five stars, but I like MacStumbler's user interface better.

OK, I've just installed MacStumbler. Looks great, works great. But I have a question: If there's a wireless network that MacStumbler detects but is not detected by the AirPort icon/menu ... how do you choose to connect to the network via MacStumbler?

You can also use Kismac from http://kismac.binaervarianz.de/index.php . It has some scary features but also has a very effective stumbler component. It shows network strength numerically as well as when the network was last seen.

To answer your question on network you can only see in the stumbler, you might just be receiving it intermittently at a very low signal strength that doesn't allow you to connect to it properly. Try moving around and finding the spot with the highest signal strength, you might be able to connect then.

Also, there are networks with hidden network names and of course some that use security that prevent you from abusing them. (You shouldn't abuse them, anyway!)

I haven't tried this, but I'd suggest choosing "Other..." from the AIrport Menu Extra, then entering the exact name (SSID) of the detected wi-fi network. Does that work?

That part i'm not that sure about. I normally use the internet connection to connect to it
That's what I'm asking: How do you use the Internet to connect to a wireless network that's showing up on MacStumbler but not showing up on AirPort?

MacStumbler shows network strength numerically as well as when the network was last seen. Just like Kismac. I checked out both of them before deciding to go with MacStumbler.

Nope, didn't work. I clicked on Other from the AirPort menu and typed in the exact name of the network, and I got a message saying "There was an error joining the network [name]."
