Mad Dog DVD RAM drive & media

I have a Mad Dog Triple Format optical drive (DVD-everything, DVD-RAM, CD R/W) and want to use it now as a DVD RAM removable data storage device. OS X 10.4.6 reads and writes CD's in it just fine. I have Panasonic 4.7 GB DVD-RAM discs, one inserted. OS X mounts the drive and it appears on desktop with media, but it is read only with no provision to modify. Disk Utility appears un-helpful. Any guidance would be appreciated.

What format is the DVD-RAM disk in? Mac OS X will write to a DVD-RAM in HFS+ and UDF format... is the disk perhaps formatted as NTFS?

Also, in System Profiler, what does it say about your DVD-RAM drive? Does it say "Burning Supported" or something similar? If not, software called Patchburn may help -- easily found with a search at versiontracker.com.

Installing Patchburn enabled iTunes to write to it after affirming to message: "You have inserted a blank DVD but originally selected a CD format. Are you sure you wish to create a data DVD instead?".

I could drag files to read/write to it after using iTunes alone, but could not change the name of the disc in the Finder until after erasing with Disk Utility. After iTunes finished, Disk Utility said it was HFS+ format and was able to modify it into other Disk Utility supported formats (UFS, HFS+ journaled, etc.).

Thanks!!!
