Mail and Re-install

I am in the process of re-installing OSX Tiger on a new MacBook.. and backing up the hard drive to an external drive. With regards to emails i have received, how can i copy these and then reinstate them into the 'new' Mail i install from scratch? I know that Windows has a file which holds all emails and settings.. has OSX have the same feature?

The files that you need are contained in two folders, ~/Library/Mail/ and ~/Library/Mail Downloads/.

A larger question is why are you wasting your time reinstalling the OS on your new machine?
