Mail app crashing under Snow Leopard

I am using a MacBook Pro 4,1 with 2 Intel processors. I am running OS 10.6.1. Ever since I installed Snow Leopard, my Mail app has misbehaved. It crashes routinely whenever I add an attachment. It never did this under 10.5. It also crashes occasionally when I save an attachment. Sometimes it appears to have taken the attachment, but when the message is sent, the attachment is corrupted. I think the only app I am having trouble with is Mail, although I think that Safari has crashed sometimes when a PDF file was downloaded. The problem seems to be associated with Snow Leopard. Should I try to do a clean install of Snow Leopard? Can I re-install only the mail app? How would I do this?

Don't use that windows trouble shooting on your Mac! It is time to learn that reseting a Mac program is VERY easy. So resetting Mail you MUST write down your email server settings (SMTP +POP/IMAP) before resetting Mail because it will blow away this settings in Mail, without touching you Saved email (that are in Custom saved folders).

Once you wrote down your email server settings Quit Mail! Then Navigate to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and find the file com.apple.mail.plist and throw into you Trash Can (to delete later). Then pick up the piece of paper you wrote down your email settings and launch Mail. Once Mail starts up asking for server stings put in the email server settings you wrote down earlier.

Good Luck.

Throwing out a program Preferences file is a VERY OLD Mac trick to reset a malfunctioning program. So don't re-install a program unless it is very old and you are upgrading it to a newer version. Old Windows trouble shooting reinstalling trick DOES NOT WORK on other operating systems.

It seems that the latest Apple fix for Snow Leopard fixed the problem of the crashing Mail application. After 10.6.2 I have had no problems. I view the problem now as solved.
