4OSX is a bit dead so I have decided to "leave the nest" so to speak
So hi!

Unfortunately my Mail app has carked it.
Some details...

The icon bounces a few times, stops, and mail fails to run.
No error message, no nothing
On trying to start it again it bounces only once then stops

As stated, I am running 10.3.5 and I have all the current java & security updates

I haven't been able to run Mail since I changed my ISP

I have tried running Mail from the dock and the Applicatoins folder with no change in result.

What should I do next?
I have considered booting from the OS X CD, would that help me out.
Um, yeah... help

Hi modular/iExpert and welcome to the forum.
The next you should try beside repairing permissions is to delete the com.apple.mail.plist file that is located in the home/Library/Preferences folder. Hope it will work fine after these steps.
Good luck!

OK
I have deleated the file, reset & run permissions repain and still no joy.
Where to know?
BTW, easy on the iExpert stuff. That was only my rating at 4OSX. People will think I have a big head.

I tried the shift boot mode, where is only loads the basic operating system files.
But that didn't help either
Where to next?
... anybody

Go to Applications folder and click once on the Mail icon.
Go to the file menu and select Get Info.
Under Ownership and Permissions, check what is listed. It should say that you have read & write permissions.
If not, click on the details arrow and see who the owner is. It should be system. If not, click on the pad lock, type in your password, then change to Read & Write.

Is only Mail doing this?

Cheryl,
I checked out the Ownership & Persmssions & that seemed fine, just like you were saying it whould look like.

This is what terminal spits out...
Don't panic, I utilised censorship rights with the XXXXs

What does "Undefinied symbols" and "undefined reference" meen :o

any way to test another mail client? Just to make sure it's mail.app that is somehow messed up and not any kind of POP and SMTP probs on your system

Mail wouldn't have time to check any accounts before opening. If it's crashing on opening, there's something going wrong before the Mail account checking...

If you're someone who keeps meticulous backups and for whom it would be no big deal, installing OS X again would definitely fix the problem with Mail. Of course you'd need to update it back up to 10.3.5, soon .6...

It's not pleasant, but if you're desperate?

Perhaps it's a corrupt Mailbox itself?

From the dump of the Terminal run, though, it sounds like something to do with iChat, strangely enough - since it refers to Instant Messages and VideoConferencing.

Make sure iChat AV is killed, and try again?

If you continue having problems, open Console in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and get the crash logs for Mail, and post the results for clues?

Console tells much the same tale...

Interestingly, I tried to start iChat and it had exactly the same error log when it crashed.
The plot thickens perhaps...

If you have the same problem with a new user account, you have a system problem, not just a user problem. Do an Archive & Install.

I just had the very same problem, although for me it was 'updating' from 10.3.6 7R14 to 7R20, which I shouldn't have done, since 7R20 is explicitly for 10.3.5 GM only. Have you done the same? Guess not, but could be, so I'm asking... Anyway: You'll have to reinstall your system, sadly. Like BobW said: If it happens for a 'clean' user, too, it has nothing to do with Mail's settings, accounts, mailboxes etc., but rather with the app itself or broken or missing frameworks in the system.

Do a good backup and reinstall or an Archive & Install. I'd update the clean new system to the newest state (10.3.5 7M34 as we're speaking) before applying the backup or Archive to the new install.

I am going to try the 10.3.5 combo updater.
If that doesn't work then I will have to take more drastic measures.
