Mail: Deleting mail from server (immediately)

One of the biggest problems I have with Mail (in Mac OS 10.2.x) is that it doesn't delete mail off the mail server until it has downloaded *all* mail in a download session (it all happens at the *end* of a download/get session).

If the download is interrupted (dialup drops out, for example) the next time Mail connects it downloads the same mail a second time. Staff at my company are very unhappy about this.

Other email clients delete each mail message off the mail server after it has been downloaded - thus avoiding the problem described above.

Has this been corrected in the new version(s) of Mail due being developed for Panther?

i hate that it deletes mail off the server period by default.... makes setting up an account on multiple machines a pain in the arse

Well, _one_ setting _has_ to be the default, and I personally agree with Apple instead of Jason here. Nothing worse for me than mail accounts on my servers gobbling up too much space.

But to the original thread's question, I don't think that this behaviour has changed, as the settings look all the same.

It is all a bit late now - Panter is almost out the door. However...

(1) I agree, the default should be to remove mail from the server after it has been downloaded (to keep mail form building up on the server). If users want they can turn off deleting mail from the mail server. They could also deactivate a POP account and setup a IMAP account (keeps mail on the mail server).

(2) Mail should *not* automatically collect email immediately after setting up an account. Why? It doesn't give the user a chance to change their setting from "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message: Right away" to something else.

(3). Back to the original reason for this posting. Despite what the wording suggests Mail doesn't "Remove copy from server after retrieving a messages: Right away". Instead it's behaviour is more like "Remove copy from the server after retrieving a message: only after retrieving all messages". (Hate this behaviour!). Why? See my first posting to this thread.

how about this?

when setting up an account, apple should let you access ALL settings before completing the account creation... i would love that, and i wouldnt have the prob that i do (different mail messages on different computers)
