Mail for Mac mailbox not responding

I have been using Mail version 2.1 consistently for about 5 months and I have 3 mail accounts set up in it. All of a sudden I can't get it to connect to the Exchange account I use for one of my jobs. It acts as if it is trying to load emails, but then times out and I get the exclamation mark.

Also, in this Exchange account I have multiple Smart mailboxes to organize job folders. Sometimes I can actually see the copy of the email in the email client and at other times it is just empty like my inbox now is. If I click on one of these, as well, I get the pie clock as if it is trying to load them.

I have tried to wipe out my account and redo it, but it continues to do the same thing.

It did work briefly one night via VPN and then the next day I went to work and tried to read email and there was nothing there again.
