Mail maximizes for new messages

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, when a new message arrives in my in box, Mail maximizes from the dock and takes up the whole screen interrupting whatever I'm working on. This is very annoying! I've looked through help and the preference menus, but I cannot find a way to shut this off. Please help. Thanks!

What happens if you either hide Mail or close the main window instead?

It still pops up from the dock. The only way I can stop it is to completely shut down the Mail program. Thanks!

Disable Magnification for Dock in System Preferences. At least it won't maximize anything..
