mail update...

octane

I have issues, OK!
I'm going to be getting my copy of Panther tomorrow, but I have a question [or two!] if I can think of more questions, I'll post right back .. better still, if anyone has any advice, let me know!

Ah, the question, right.

I use Apple Mail. To make a back up of Mail, I just copy my ~/Library/Mail folder to cd and burn, that's it.

When I update to Panther, can I just drop this folder back in and have the new Mail see it and work with it? or have things changed?

I really _need_ my mail. I have thousands of correspondence, and attachments that I CAN NOT be without.

Any help / advice would be cool!..

Upgrading to Panther will leave all you existing mail, attachments and accounts untouched. you just carry on as if nothing has changed

Well, maybe I ought to have mentioned that it'll be a clean install. I absolutely _never_ install a major update onto an existing OS. The only time I do that is with .x updates, and even then I back up all of my work before hand...

yes, that will bring your mailboxes to the new os. (stll you need to remember your acocutn and password information).

remember also to save your address book data, and some preferences may be useful to bring to the new system as well.

The one thing that I do as a matter of course when installing software on OS X, is that I make sure that the software in question is installed locally [me; ~/Library] rather than globally [everyone; /Library]. That way, all I have to do is make a back up of my account rather than rummaging around in the /Library folder for stray preference files et al.

It's going to take a couple of days to do this properly. I've got to get MySQL, PHP and about a half dozen other bits 'n' bobs to play nicely together.

I might install Panther on my iBook first [the iBook is almost a carbon copy of my G4 , and no meetings planned until after christmas!] and get things working there first.

if you have a superdrive, you have idvd. that is not included in panther dvds - so save the applciation (as just application, then drag it to the new applications folder, it will work in 10.3).

just save all programs (that were not with the system) you use in cds/a dvd, just in case. some will have compatibility issues with 10.3, but most will work - or the patch for the working version is available.

That reminds me. I _don't_ have a Super Drive, but I would like to get one. Now, as I understand it, there's no way to buy an internal one from Apple, so the question is: who _does_ produce DVD Writers that are compatible with Apples iLife suite?

Pioneer DVR-106 or A06 is the drive you want, the one Apple uses and compatible with ALL Apple programs. The only difference between the two, the A06 is OEM and doesn't include any software or cables, which you don't need. You can buy it for $126.00 here;

Someone else mentioned the Pioneer A06 to me before, but they didn't get back to me on the iLife issue. Thanks, bobw. I'll bare that in mind...

Well, I've got Panther on my iBook...

Wow! I've got a new iBook ;-) Not only is it faster but I think the battery is being used more efficiently. A good test would mean getting Microsoft Office X back on and doing something in Word. If anything is going to devour battery life, Word will!

Apart from a few niggles with MySQL being installed / un-installed all at the same time [?!] we're cooking with gas.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in to help me...

Now all [did I say 'all'?] I have to do is update my G4 workstation .. aaaagghhhhhh!
