mail vs ipage

I have a macbook pro (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.5.8) and i am running mail Version 3.6 (936). I have my website/email hosted with ipage.com. All of a sudden, with no changes in my mail settings, i am getting the error message "ipage: trying to log into this SMTP account failed. Please make sure the username and password are correct".

As I have not changed these settings (and i logged onto my webmail account to be sure that the settings are the same), so I called ipage phone support and they tell me it must be a "MAC update problem" and that I should contact a Mac forum to determine what is wrong.

I called back and the second time spoke with an ipage.com tech rep who admitted that other mac mail users were calling in with the same problem. I know it is ipage, because my other email accounts, from different domains hosted with different companies, are working just fine---like before.

can you offer me any advice---either directly or to help pose a question that i can put to ipage.com so that this issue can be resolved. I can log onto my webmail account, but this is cumbersome and does not allow me the flexibility and ease of using Mail.

thank you

SMTP server access is controlled by the provider and does so on a provideer-by-provider basis. Some providers limit unprotected access to their SMTP servers from outside domains as a security measure. Many don't. However, those that do may change policy without notice. And some of those who don't may loosen restrictions. What one provider permits has absolutely no bearing on what a different provider permits.

Unprotected SMTP servers are usually accessed through Port 25. You may find that protected SMTP access will work through Port 587. There are other more obscure protected SMTP ports that may work for you.

That said, it appears that ipage.com may have restricted SMTP access inadvertently. It appears to be aware of the problem. I presume that it is working on the problem. Other than advising you to change SMTP ports, there is nothing that anyone here can do to help you. You should stay in communication with ipage.com to see when it will fix the problem.

P.S.

An SMTP server is just a relay for outgoing mail. It is provided by the provider as a convenience. It does not define the email account. The email account is defined by the incoming mail server. You may use any SMTP server that a available to you to send mail.

thank you for your considered, meticulous response---your information helped me to articulate the problem better with ipage, and yes, in fact, they did solve the problem. They said their "server" was down, but that is beside the point---at least I am getting emails now.

much appreciation for your assistance
