Hello, i reciently purchased a dual processor G5 and have been playing around with it a bit...at first i found no problems in the volume keys on the keybord....but all of a sudden whenever i press some of my function keys (volume up / volume down / mute / eject / even F16) my screen flashes once and closes all open applications.

im not sure what my problem is, or if its on apples side....but ive been running osx on my ibook for a year and a half now, and havent seen this problem ever...

System:
Dual 2ghz G5 - 512mb ram
Standard keyboard that it comes with
Microsoft explorer mouse
17inch cinima display

please let me know what you think my problem could be....im quite scared after only owning this $3500+ machine for only 10 hours :(

thanks guys, this is my only lifeline before i call apple...

Try repairing permissions: Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> First Aid -> Repair Permissions

Hope this helps

You have your dual G5 already?

Seems a tad early, where did you buy it?

I was order #63 and mine was just shipped out yesterday (from Apple).

Very cool that you got one early. As far as the problem, it's hard to say exactly what that is, as I've never experienced it. Since osx operates with isolated memory, it seems as if something is actually simultaneously triggering the end of every program.

It almost sounds as if you're logging out.

I'll wait until I get my G5 either today or tomorrow before I comment any further.

:)

Well, did you install anything software related? Something hardware perhaps? Did you Trash/delete/erase whatever? Did you remove, reinsert hardware components?

Other than just using it what did you do with it? I mean for something like that to appear all of a sudden, while not something unheard before, is VERY strange

I hope that everything will turn fine! :(

i tried reparing permissions, didnt work.

in responce to hulkaros, i did install software, but only Office X, Macromedia MX and adobe photoshop 7, all programs which worked find on my ibook (just slower)

and also, quake 3

these are the only prorams on my g5 besides the original ones, does this help?

i still have the problem :(

What about something simple, like Full Keyboard Access settings (check in the Universal Assess pane, to turn off all settings, also check Keyboard options from some stray setting that's not needed here.) That wouldn't explain all apps quitting! Wouldn't there be something in Crash log???? No error messages??? Still could be just a setting

Did you install the MS mouse software? Did you download and install version 5.0 of that Intellipoint software? I saw a really strange crash problem that was solved with that update.
