Making every finder window open with Columns

I am a big fan of columns. Finder usually remembers that i like this, unless I connect to a network share or do a Go > Go to Folder, has anyone found a way to fix this, I did a little searching, didnt quite find anyone with the exact same problem.

Delete the .DS_Store files on the server, log in as an admin user, open the share, immediately set the window preference without navigating through any files or folders, close the window, then eject the share.

Done in that order, server share windows retain their settings for all users in my network. Clients are a combination of 10.2.8 and 10.3.5, server is OS X Server 10.3.5.
