Making slideshows using Preview

I have Mac OS 10.5.8 and can't seem to get the hang of making a slideshow using Preview.

In Preview's help window it says:
1. Open the first image in Preview
2. Choose View>Sidebar
3. Drag the other images from the Finder to the sidebar
(this is where I have the problem)
4. Select the first image
5. Choose View>Slideshow

I can create the Sidebar, but cannot drag other images from a folder into it.

Help!

When you open the first image, you need to select Thumbnails form the View menu and then add your images.
