Married? Or how would ...

Well, I asked my fiancee to marry me in the Atlanta Airport. I was returning from Germany to Atlanta for Christmas vacation, and both of our families were waiting at the airport. My dad had the ring, since I had it custom made in New York and instead of paying the taxes for sending it to Germany, I had it sent home. So my dad met me at the gate.
Well, upon getting up the escalator, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me in front of everyone at the airport.
She said yes, and lives with me now in Germany.

Massachusetts, I just heard, will allow same sex marriages from today midnight. Ask him if he wants to go to Massachusetts ;)
Yes, but only to residents of MA.... and is not "legal in all 50 states and recognized by the federal government."

Well Mark, maybe I'm naive, but I do think federal politics makes a real difference to me. Partly because I want to work for the federal government, of course. Partly also because of the progressive things PM Chretien tried to push through before he retired - they have maybe a chance of happening if the Conservatives don't win.

Incidentally, I had my first law class today, and we talked about the gay marriage issue. The deal is, apparently, this marvelous example of convoluted Canadian-ness:

The recognition of marriage is federal jurisdiction, so the federal government gets to say who can be married or not. The solemnization of marriage, that is, the actual process of getting married, is under the control of the province where it happens. So, each province gets to say who can get married in that province, but they have no choice but to recognize all marriages from anywhere in Canada. So, maybe gays won't be able to get married in Alberta, but they will soon be able to go to BC or Saskatchewan, get married there, and come back and be married in Alberta...
