Mass emails??

wicky

play thing
I have been asked by a client to send an HTML email to 2,500 people. Does anybody have any first hand knowledge of sending bulk emails? Any server issues that I should be aware of, tools, etc? Any advice much appreciated!

*** This is not a spam email ***
It's going to a large amount of film industry bod's who have signed up to the HTML mailing list.

Use a mass mailing _service_, don't try to do it with just your E-Mail client. Any SMTP-server you're privately using will think you _are_ trying to spam.

Seems to me like this service somehow wasn't _prepared_ to have over a thousand subscribers?

Definitely don't send them yourself. It's worth doing some research on so-called "email blast" services that offer a suite of customer relationship management, or CRM, services. There are big-name services and small ones; it's worth doing some research on what you need, and what you can afford.

It shouldn't cost much to get up and running with a service that can handle thousands of subscribers, and that includes user-driven subscribe and unsubscribe and other standard features.

Here's some other options. You pay per so many emails:

I'd recommend picking a service that lets you customize your template so your email is 'branded' correctly and represents your company in the best light possible. Unsubscribe options are important due to spam laws, and if you are sending emails to California in particular (since you are hitting the movie/entertainment industry) make sure your email is compliant with its stringent anti-spam orndinances per every location your email will go (Must have unsubscribe option and full disclosure of company details etc.)

Here's more on California's new spam laws, enacted in 2003:

Thanks.

All emails will be UK / Continental Europe only, but thanks for the CA info anyway. It's good to know for future ref.

Ideally I would like to design the HTML email as I would normally for small circulation newsletters, etc., and just use the mailing service to facilitate sending the email out.

I'm not sure what format the client is going to supply the list in yet either.... he's supposed to be sorting it out over the w/e.

Cheers
