Maxtor falls short of warranty in IMac

I have a one-and-a-half year old IMAC Flat Screen. The hard drive just quit and I am trying to replace it under Maxtor's warranty. Since the Apple coverage is up I called Maxtor only to be told that even though the warranty stated on the drive says its covered through July 2005, they will not cover it since it was part of an Apple system and is covered by their (Apple) warranty. Has anyone else had a similar experience or have any advise other than footing the bill for a new drive myself?

Did you use the Hardware Test Cd to make sure it was the drive that failed? I would call Apple and complain loudly. A drive is not suppose to die within two years.

True, a drive is not supposed to die within a year, but it happens. It's a shame Apple offers only a one year warranty unless you spend more.

Don't complain to Apple in the sense of being a prick -- be calm, polite, but persistent. If someone on the other end of the phone doesn't help you, politely and firmly ask to speak to a supervisor, and repeat until a solution is found.

Also, if Apple doesn't help, then calling Maxtor back and repeating the process may yield some good results.

I removed the drive and installed it in my dual proc G4 and had the same results. The system, when booted from the resident boot drive, would not recognize the IMac drive even with the disk utility. I dropped an older 6gb drive into the IMac and it works fine.
Just to clarify my phone chain, I first called Apple support who politely told me that there was nothing they could do and that I should call Maxtor, which I did one minute later with dissapointing results.
