anyone have one? how does yours work?
i have one, and it constantly seems to.. crash? well, not sure if its crashing.. alot of times, when i'm on my computer, the drive seems to just stop reading correctly. it'll start making this "clunk.. clunk... clunk... clunk..." sound.. when its trying to access. i normally have to shut off the hd, disconnect the firewire cord, and then wait about 5 seconds and start it back up. if it spins up correctly (sometimes, it'll spin up, and then just start "clunking", i'll plug the firewire cord back in..)
i had another maxtor hd that did the SAME thing.. i have a western digital hd and never had this problem with it.. i'm thinking it has to do more with the firewire bridge/controller (whatever its called), than the actual drive.. but maybe i'm wrong.. =\

anyone care to share their thoughts?

oh, if your interested.. i'm not using the software provided by maxtor.. (i tried it out before, and it doesn't effect it any other way..)

I have a Maxtor 40G firewire HD, and it sort of, well, stops. My computer will attempt to access it for no apparent reason, in the middle of an important task that has NOTHING to do with the Maxtor HD, when the red light lights up solid (not flickering like in normal use) and I get that evil spinning rainbow until the drive figures itself out. I have determined that the power supply is not doing something right, since what it sounds like when it gets fixed is the drive spinning up, and when I use the "unplug" method to fix it, it will not go on the first time I switch it on after that. Sometimes it emits a short, dreadful noise like tiny screeching tires. Oh, well, I have more MP3's than will ft on my 20G internal drive (especially with an OS sharing the space!) so I guess I'm stuck.

my maxtor has problems being properly recognized at startup in osx sometimes. it also has problems copying to my acom drive. these are most likely problems with the bridge which needs to be updated. The problems i am hearing described sound more like a drive that needs to defragmented and optimized than anything else.

hmm... my maxtor 40G firewire drive doesn't seem to want to be startup drive. but apart from that it works perfectly. guess there are good and bad models...
