The fan/s on my MBP are down. The warranty was up in May, so I'm stuck with the bill on this one. I was looking online and found some fans. I'd like to get proper apple parts on this one. What I found was that there were left and right fans available. So my questions are:

Do all MBP's have 2 fans?

Where's the best place to get them?

Is this job are hard one to do on my own? Any links to repair manuals?

Thanks for any help guys.

Cheers,

Jim

All MacBook Pros have 2 fans.

How have you determined that the fan(s) doesn't work? Are they noisy?

You should have this checked at an Apple specialist, as the fans could be OK, but you might have a faulty temp sensor somewhere.
Even having an Apple service replace both fans shouldn't be hugely expensive, even if both fans are replaced - perhaps around $200-250 for both fans. Not too much compared to most laptop repairs.

Yeah, $250 bucks is much more than I want to spend to get my 13 month old computer to get fixed :( Might as well just get the apple care I guess.....But the biggest problem is losing my laptop for the 3-4 days its gonna take to get dialed in. I need it for work. I was hooping I could just open it up and replace the fans... I guess its not that easy?

You're right, the temp sensor could be out, not sure. Is this a common problem? The fans NEVER come on anymore, and the other day I think it overheated because it just shut down on me all of a sudden.....

Pretty bummed..... never had ANY problems with my old PB G4.

Unfortunately, it seems that overall quality control on Apple's 'books has been slipping in the last few years, and with MB Pro's tendency to run hot, problems seem to occur more frequently. The higher the temps, the more stress on electronics. And with MacBook fans running a LOT more often(as well as MacBook Pros running a lot hotter than Powerbooks), the fans are really stressed.
Of course, if your MB Pro's fans suddenly quit working, it conceivably could be the temp sensor or something related.
But you'd have to get the problem diagnosed by a qualified tech, I'm afraid.
At any rate, getting to the MB Pro's fans is a difficult procedure requiring a major teardown. Here's some illustrated, step by step instructions for doing it; it's definitely NOT for the faint of heart or inexperienced.

But I really empathize with you; running into such a problem with a year old MacBook Pro really hurts.:(

Just got the MBP serviced and had the new fans installed. The tech said the old fans were stuck, and that after freeing them up, everything was fine. I told him to just put some new fans in because he's already got it opend up. The great part is my company picked up the bill.... so and I had them throw another gig of ram in there for me ;)

I was thinking about getting a cooling pad for it now. Anyone have any really good suggestions that will fit my 15" MBP?

Thanks!!!

Jim

I have a PowerBook 15", and use the iLap. It doesn't have any fans like some pads, but it puts space between the bottom of the computer, and takes it off your lap. I use my PowerBook on my desk, and it works well for that too - without it the screen is too low.
