MDD G4 - can't get mic to work

I have a mirrored drive door G4 dual and I need to do some voiceover in iMovie. I have a mic that came with an older mac, pretty much apple standard issue from older computers. I have changed my system prefs>sound to line-in audio, and still I get no sound coming through. I tried 2 mics with same 1/8 inch plug. Does the G4 need a different (or newer) microphone to work?

Found this on an older thread. Pretty much sums it up. If anyone else has info to the contrary, please post.

"There is nothing wrong with it. I believe that you are using the line-in plug. Is that correct? I say this because most people do not understand that it is not a microphone jack. It is a line-in jack so you need something with power behind it. You would be better off buying a USB microphone."

The MDD has a 16 bit Stereo mini-jack, so that Apple mic should work, unless the mic is bad.

I have a G4 AGP, same type Audio in jack, using an old Apple mic and works fine.
The mic I use came with a 6500/30 machine.
