Member Ignore

The appearance on the board of Kendall2 can only mean one thing, that the one SOB was ignored. I have always had problems with the whole concept of the ignore, the way it expunges the history of the offending poster completely (a little big-brotherish to my mind) but have left it to the discretion of the board.

Now, I try to read all most of the new posts once a day, I think lots of people do that, but I did not see the one SOB being more than mildly aggressive. That aggression sometimes incites others to a higher response - in short, it keeps the board from becoming sterile.

It may be that his personal communication with the administration was so hot that he got canned, I don't know. But I have to say that the policy of ignoring is not working as far as the overall community is concerned.

Let individual members decide who they will ignore and who not. If the board needs to curb an individual for whatever reason, let them just de-activate the account, not wipe it out.

Ignoring sucks!

the only time i see fit to justify erasing a member completely is when thier posts consist of noting but flames and mean comments. other than that, if it is a dispute with the administration and they have posted contributing comments, just lock out the account....

I have never found these "flamers" to be a productive or beneficial part of any user group. newsgroup or forum. They only want a reaction and don't serve any other productive purpose. If I want inflammatory statements (and to hurl, retch and gag!) I will turn on Rush Limbaugh. No wait, I never listen to him…

It's not like the moderators here are silencing people willy nilly. :)

thank you Nat.

if we could just get you guys to ignore the inflammatry statements made by some, then we wouldn't have to do it. but too many people are too easily sucked into the trap and soon it becomes a lot of work to moderate.

and keep in mind, that once a member is banned - that's it. that member is gone forever. but they will likely come back as someone else. again - more moderating work. but we generally put people on ignore if we feel that they have made some worthy contributions. we'd rather thay get the idea this way than have it shoved down their throat. if they do, we let them back. if not, we ban them.

of course, when you have to start a thread like this, you end up defeating the whole purpose, don't you? so in the future, just keep your trap shut and let the scene play out if you will. the member will always figure it out for themselves after awhile. and then we will all have grown a little instead of just punishing our offenders and causing more grief for ourselves and them.

of course, there are other mac sites that simply ban them. and some that even allow obnoxious behavior. we strongly encourage anyone who believes these are better approaches to participate in those sites. :)
