Menubar clock refuses to appear

My OS X (10.5.6) gave me what appeared to be the blue screen of death today... mid-task it went blue, then rebooted. I noticed that the menubar clock in the top-right corner was missing, as were most of the other icons normally visible up there. I went to System Preferences/Date & Time/Clock, and noticed that the 'Show date and time in menu bar' option was deselected, so I re-selected it but the clock did not appear immediately, like it should. The setting refuses to stick; every time I exit out of Prefs, it deselects itself.

I saw one thread re: a similar problem (although not for OSX 10.5.x) that suggested going to Home/Library/Preferences and deleting "com.apple.MenuBarClock.plist" (it worked for the other user), so I did that, but it fixed nothing.

Any other suggestions?

How about trying>go into prefs. again and trash finder prefs and system prefs. empty trash and do a restart. This may do the trick?

Thanks Dickster. Before I trashed finder prefs and system prefs, I tried just emptying my trash and restarting, and that did the trick - my menubar clock is back. Looks like emptying the trash may be next most useful generic trick next to rebooting! Thanks for your help.
