hi, i have an xlr microphone (regular studio microphone)
i found an xlr adapter that allows for it to record with "any stereo camcorder"
since my computer has the same microphone input jack as my computer, do you guys think the adapter will work with my computer?

thanks,

Not very likely. The mic probably needs a preamplifier to connect to a computer. Also, it's possible that the impedance won't match. But it doesn't hurt to try :)

agreed. Even assuming that you have a dynamic mic, the output probably isn't going to be of the level your computer is expecting. It'll be reeeeaaaaaally quiet. After negating the benefits of XLR by rewiring it to go into a headphone jack, you might as well just get a cheap radio shack mic that's actually made for the job. :-(

Audio is hard. Anyone who says differently hasn't tried to do pro audio on a humane budget.

i can vouch for this. i've got XLR -> 1/4" -> 1/8" -> duplex -> computer and the computer can barely hear anything. there are a LOT of converters attached to this thing, heh.

the mac microphone input has always been the same:
not good for microphones.
actually it is a LINE input.
you sould use a preamplifier if you want to record to your mac with that mic

And minijack/phono plugs ruin the sound quality and creates ground loops. Why can't Apple just put an XLR connector with preamplifier and a grounding point on their pro Macs?

they wouldnt do it becuase no one records only 1 channel anymore... and if they are into recording they would get a Motu 828 or some other multichannel firewire device....
