Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac

I have Microsoft Word 11.3.8 (I had 11.3.5 but updated today).
When checking my Preferences under Spelling and Grammar, it is all greyed out and I cannot :
Check as you type
always suggest corrections, etc.
How do I make sure that I can use these preferences, please?

One thing you can try out is to quit Word and go to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft and get your old preference file and move it out to your desktop or some place other than the library and then open Word again. If that fixes it, then I would just poof the old preferences file. Be careful as there's another file in that area and it's your settings. Don't putz with that. These plist files can be a real pain especially when you are upgrading your application.
