Sonar is not available for Mac OS X. However, Cubase SX is cross-platform and especially the new version 2.01 is very good. I prefer it over Logic which however is recommended for Mac OS X very often, I just don't like it. Another well established app is MOTU Digital Performer, but I don't know how good their new Mac OS X version is. You probably want to visit a dedicated forum to find out more.

Reason does not create MIDI files.

Digital Performer, Logic, and Cubase, as have been mentioned, are all good applications; you'll probably prefer one over another. Protools is up in there with these as well, as it is the standard for editing mixes.

However, for straight MIDI creation, I recommend Melody Assistant by Myriad. It is an excellent application, interface glitches/oddities notwithstanding, and it costs a mere US$15. Plus, you can use it for free for as long as you like with very few crippled features. I've used other software, and this is the only thing I use to make music right now. If I had a band and we were recording, I would use one of the programs I mentioned to arrange the songs, but I would still use Melody to write them.
