Mini HD vs Flash ?

Here is a typical Café discussion:

Why would anybody go for small HD when very large Flash memories are available ?
Flash memories have the following advantages:
Smaller
Lighter
Extremely fast read capabilities
Lower power
Robust to shock and vibration

And now they are available in size up to 2 GB !

So why mini-HD ?

Easy answer: Not all systems have USB 2.0 , which means that reads (and writes) will be really s-l-o-w, especially with large file transfers. I would like a FireWire flash drive, and have seen announcements about new products for FireWire flash. Till then, I use an external FireWire HD for anything large. IMHO, 256 MB is the (reasonable) limit for a flash drive with USB 1.1

2GB flash is easily available. I have read reports for up to 8-16 GB from specialist manufacturers. (Big price, too!) These are usually (camera) flash cards.

well, heres the deal. yes, flash is obvoiusly the better choice at lower capacities, but once you get up to the GB level, its un goldy exspensive. so unless you have to make sure you can set your device on fire and not loose your data, its best to go with HD. (flash is notoriously durable)

? ? I have very seldom set a flash device on fire. What's that like?
If it's notoriously durable, I want it! Is that the same as famously durable?
I tend to go through flash devices (mostly mislaid)
