Missing free space on hard drive...help!

Okay, here's the scenario :

I have an 80 gig hard drive in my Mac Mini (not Intel...older model). I am running OS X 10.4.8

I have totalled up the space used in all my folders (Apps, Movies, Music, Docs, Pics, Libraries, Public, Sites, and System) and come up with 37 gig used.

I have an 80gig hard drive and my system tells me there's only 5 gig left.

Where's the rest of the space? How can I find what's using it?

Thanks in advance.

Peace,

Chip

Thoughts?

i would suggest a restart, if you havent already. open disk utility, and in the Memory tab, see how big the VM file is.

When I run Disk Utility, there is no 'memory' tab to click on.

I've restarted several times, there's only one other user account with nothing in it (recently created), the trash is emptied...running out of options here...

open a Terminal window (Terminal is under /Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command:

sudo du -x -h -d 1 /

This will show everything. If you can't see anything useful, , paste the results here.

69M /.Spotlight-V100
0B /.Trashes
512B /.vol
6.0G /Applications
1.0K /automount
3.5M /bin
0B /cores
512B /dev
5.4G /Library
512B /Network
81M /private
2.2M /sbin
1.2G /System
30G /Users
482M /usr
24G /Volumes <------- HERE IT IS!
68G /

Now...how do I clean that up? I can't even find that thru the finder...

Peace,

Chip

Disconnect your external drives and empty trash and restart and see if that helps.

Awesome! It 'showed' plenty...my hard drive, backup drive I and backup drive II along with a folder called "Other" that was filled with stuff from mid-April. All stuff I had already on the main drive.

I deleted the whole folder...75,000 items and the missing 25 gig of space was returned to me.

Thanks for all your help, everyone!!!

Peace,

Chip
