Missing sound, missing volume control in quicktime browser plugin

The following strange problem started recently for me:

On some (but not all) of the new trailers at http://www.apple.com/trailers/ , the sound is missing and so is the volume control that's usually at the lower left corner of the quicktime plugin rectangle.

I've already tried:
* reinstalling quicktime (6.5.2)
* restarting
* using different browsers (safari and firefox)

The folks at apple trailers say that no one else is reprting similar problems.

Any ideas?

When you reinstalled Quicktime, if you didn't trash the preferences first, you would have the same problem, if they were the cause.

I trashed the preferences to both the plugin and quicktime player, but that made no difference.

Also, logging in as a different user does not fix the problem.
