Mobile Account from a 10.5 server to 10.6 clients

My X-Serve is the original G4 XServe so I can't upgrade it from 10.5 to Snow Leopard (10.6). The new laptop is 10.6.

I can't seem to use mobile accounts with the laptop. Any ideas on a solution short of buying a brand new server?
