Modem drops connection but "stays connected"

I have bit of a noisy telephone line and so i some times get random disconnects.

10.1 never recognises that the connection has been droped. You can unplug the phone line and it will stay connected for hours. Does OS X ever check the connection status, so it can recognise that the connection has been lost?

This is really frustrationg when trying to download large files. If the OS knew the connection was lost then it could dial again..... but no.

Any ideas any one?

in your PPP setup you much check 2 little boxs that say something about PPP Echos and ... oh crap i dont remember now. And this comptuer doesnt have a modem in it. But it has to do with the way PPP is setup in your network prefs.

thank you, this seems to have fixed it. It now says i have been disconnected.

It takes about 20 seconds, but it does recognise that the connection has been lost.
