Modem not Initialising

Confused

Registered
Hi,

Seems to have problem with the internal modem (56k) of my Ibook G4 notebook purchased 4 months back . Have frequent difficulty dialing out. Error messages rec'd "Error opening the communicating device". Can someone please help. I have downloaded all possible software updates, recent version being 10.3.7, but doesn't seem to solve problem.

Many thanks

:p

Well, this could be _any_thing from a bad phone line over a bad cable to a bad connector... Have you tried Apple's support pages? As I don't use my internal 56k modem ever, I may be the wrong person to answer this, anyway.

Anyone out there still using those internal modems who has seen this problem happen too often?

yes!
its happening to me and its a pain in the ass.

if you look in the system log i get errors like these:
system.log said:
Code:
Dec 14 13:14:13 localhost pppd[394]: pppd 2.4.2b1 started by root, uid 0
Dec 14 13:14:44 localhost kernel: InternalModemSupport::acquirePort -- ERROR -- InternalUSBModem.kext did not load after 30 seconds
Dec 14 13:14:44 localhost kernel: InternalModemSupport::acquirePort: still no modem after powering on the modem
Dec 14 13:14:44 localhost pppd[394]: Failed to open /dev/cu.modem: Device busy
Dec 14 13:14:44 localhost pppd[394]: Exit.

Dec 23 07:22:20 localhost pppd[5783]: pppd 2.4.2b1 started by root, uid 0
Dec 23 07:22:25 localhost kernel: InternalUSBModem::setPowerState(1)
Dec 23 07:22:28 localhost /usr/libexec/CCLEngine: Version 2.0
Dec 23 07:22:28 localhost /usr/libexec/CCLEngine: Dialling 086747765
Dec 23 07:23:10 localhost pppd[5783]: Connect script failed
Dec 23 07:23:15 localhost pppd[5783]: Exit.

The messages I see on screen range from -
"Error could not open communications device" to
"The carrier signal was lost" - (it didn't even dial so how could it loosed the carrier)

I have just done a fresh install using combo updater to get to 10.3.7, the problems vanished for about 3 days. Before the reinstalled i was getting kernel panics occasionally. I don't know what's happening but it only started this month.

Also the panics i was getting weren't the usual "pretty" ones saying you must restart your computer but good old screen dumps with lots of white on black text.

I don't know what's happening, but i think it is a combination of hardware and software errors...

I believe Apple has been trying to resolve this issue but somehow I do not sem to be able to get a cure ?

This was documented in the support FAQ but nothing sems to help, even upgrading to a newer version.......

I had to use the dial up when travelling overseas so as broadband services do not come easy .......

Tried posting Apple website support but no reply !!!!!
