Have an eMac running 10.3.9. At the current time it still uses dial up via the internal 56K modem. In the past week, the modem does not even register a dial tone. I've tried different phone cords, different phone lines and the modem never tries to dial out and when it tries it never fully disconnects. The "disconnecting" message always appears, even with a force quit, or killing it from the Process Viewer. I have to reboot it to kill it. I've tried to Command-Option-PR on restart, ran DU and used TechTool which did not find any problems.
In the Console I see these messages which may or may not be related:
Can't get device for hd:,\\:tbxi: 3
Readconfig[383] BSDPClientCreateWithInterface(en0) failed, Interface not configured
SystemUIServer[289] Error: Unable to get extended status
And in the system.log:
localhost pppd[433]: Failed to acquire /dev/cu.modem in exclusive mode: Device busy
localhost kernel: AppleI2SModemFamily::SSIStartUp -- SSIStartUp3034 two sync mode is UNSUCCESSFUL after 20 tries!
localhost pppd[293]: Connect script failed
Time for an A&I?
