Monitor does not work with my Cube

Hi

I recently bought an Apple Cube G4 450 mhz from Ebay which arrived this morning.

I connected it up via the VGA port to an old Dell monitor which I have been using fine with my PC. When I start the Cube, it will begin to boot up, but the monitor screen remains blank and seems like it cannot be powered by the mac. Everything is plugged in as it should be.

Is there a problem with this type of monitor being able to connect to macs? It is a Dell D1528-LS monitor if that helps and its pretty old (1995).

Thanks a lot
Henry

If this is a previously used G4 Cube, then it's possible that it's set to the refresh rate and resolution of the monitor that the previous user had, which wouldn't be compatible with the monitor you own. Try zapping the PRAM a few times (hold down Command-Option-P-R after the Mac startup chime...keep it held down for about 3 chimes or so). This should reset the video settings to something that the monitor can sync to.

I read somewhere thats what I should do, and I tried it already with no luck.

On reading your advice I connected everything up again and tried reseting the PRAM again. After starting the machine and holding down the 4 buttons, nothing seems to happen. The cube just continues to boot up and make these noises like someone lashing a whip (is this normal??). The screen still stays blank.

Hmmm... one more try..... if you boot and hold down "Shift" while it starts up, it should boot in "Safe" mode using a basic resolution that the monitor can use. Try that?

Ok I've tried that and NOTHING.

One thing I did find out, is that there are only 13 pins, not 15 on the VGA which connects onto the computer. Could this be linked to the monitor not working? Although, it seems fine connected up to the PC though??

I think Im gonna cry.

that wip lashing noise has me worried. if the mac makes any noise other then the bong, there is a hardware problem. did they sell the mac to use as working? if they did, i'd contact them as ask whats up. if not, then you may have to open it to see if anything is missing, like ram.
